I w= ould like to share with you some exciting changes to our donation procedure= s that will enable us to help even more people. Many of you have shared wit= h your Board of Trustees and me interesting ideas for expanding giving oppo= rtunities to our Foundation. As a result, you can now choose from five gene= ral categories to designate your donations and receive Melvin Jones Fellows= hip recognition for each donation:

Area of Greatest Need= : Donatio= ns in this category will support all program areas and allow LCIF the flex= ibility to supplement initiatives where additional funding is necessary or= where the need is most urgent.

= Disaster: Don= ations designated here enable LCIF to direct the funds to the areas most in= need following disasters in order to provide for immediate, mid and long-t= erm relief.  

&nb= sp;

= Sight: Donati= ons here seek to support hundreds of sight-related activities ranging from = equipping eye clinics to providing Braille computers for the visually impai= red.

&nb= sp;

= Youth: Donati= ons in this category support the Lions Quest program and other initiatives = such as educational infrastructure improvements and programs to assist at-r= isk youth.

&nb= sp;

= Humanitarian Needs: Donations here will fund projects that meet diverse community needs = beyond sight, disaster and youth, such as the measles program, wat= er wells and vocational training programs for the disabled.

Lio= ns Quest Continues to Grow
Are you interested in starting Lions Quest but don't know where to = begin? There are several new materials to assist in beginning or expanding = the Lions Quest program. A how-to brochure<= /a> provides a step-by-step guide through the process. Lions Quest: A Global Success is= a new video that provides positive examples of the program around the worl= d. A Communi= ty Partnership Grant program was created to assist Lions distric= ts and multiple districts in beginning or reactiving Lions Quest programs. = A limited number of grants are available for up to US$10,000.

Diabetes Awareness
With World Diabetes Day observed this = month, Lions have an opportunity to reaffirm their long-standing commitment= to improving health. The World Health Organization estimates that more tha= n 346 million people in the world have diabetes. Through two LCIF grant pro= grams, Lions are increasing their efforts to fight diabetes. SightFirst has provided US$2.7 million for diabetic retin= opathy projects, educating over 1.5 million people and conducting over 23,0= 00 surgeries since 1995. Disaster Relief Updat= es
LCIF remains committed to helping Lions long after the initial= shock and devastation of a disaster. Rebuilding efforts continue in Haiti with a collaborative project between L= CIF and Food for the Poor. US$2.78 million will provide 400 permanent homes= and a community center that will offer vocational training. Additiona= lly, four projects totaling nearly US$3 million are under way in Japan to continue providing needed aid, including a= special victims' assistance fund, emergency radio equipment, cleaning and = food service equipment and more. LCIF is mobilizing a total of US$21 millio= n for Japan.
SightFirst Making an Impact in Latin America
Lions in Latin Amer= ica are changing lives through blindness prevention activities, with suppor= t from SightFirst. A total = of 496,586 river blindness treatments have been provided. Additionally 12,5= 28 cataract surgeries have helped to restore sight. Two comprehensive, mult= iple district diabetic retinopathy projects aim to treat 2,360 diabetic pat= ients; 320 infants will be helped through a multiple district retinopathy o= f prematurity project; and four eye clinics are receiving support for renov= ation and equipment upgrades. Future enewsletters will highlight the impact= of funds raised through Campaign SightFirst II in other regions of the wor= ld.
